Character Descriptions

Class writing of a character.  Check out our blogs for more character writing.

Who is New Zealand’s most famous trickster?  Changing from animal to human, bird to human, mountain to human you can never trust what Maui will do next.  He can hide his muscular form inside a waka to stow away from his brothers.  He can use his magical powers to stretch out the sea, hold blood on a hook and pull up a gigantic new land.  He is best known for his unusual adventures, his strength and power.  His curious nature often led to victory.

Maui always held his head high.  His chest was puffed out like a proud warrior, yet in situations when he wanted to be sneaky, Maui moved with stealth like movements.  Maui was determined to get his way, regardless of who he hurt.  Payback was often worse and physical.

Carefully disguising himself, Maui would use the sacred jawbone  to make mischief, of one kind or another.  His nasty pranks upset his whanau but usually had a purpose.  By using magical chants, Maui would cast his spells.  His sarcasm, tone and wit often belittled people and made them feel furious.

Using his tricking skills, Maui fooled his grandfather into giving him his sacred jawbone.  The magical powers that the the jawbone carries helped Maui on his adventures. Throughout legends, the jawbone is used to help Maui become a hero.

Buddy Class

Today we are working with lego.  We are designing pieces that we will photograph.  Tomorrow we will give all the pieces to our buddies in room 17 to see if they can make them from the photos.  We had to think really hard about our buddies and what they would be capable of.

Too Many Secrets

We loved Too Many Secrets so much we have started the next one. Too Many Secrets had us on the edge of our seats - especially at the end.  We loved the way the author built the suspense up right to the end.  We think all the senior teachers should read it t their classes!  Highly recommended by Room 10.  Adele Broadbent is our favourite author.
Here is a link to Adele's blog http://adelebroadbent.blogspot.co.nz/  -Take a look.

Synopsis

We have been learning to write a synopsis of the books we have been reading in class. Ours had to have the following points
  • The book’s title and author
  • A brief summary of the plot that doesn’t give away too much
  • Comments on the book’s strengths and weaknesses
  • The reviewer’s personal response to the book with specific examples to support praise or criticism
We wrote one together, as a class, on our class book.

Check out the Room 10 blogs to read the ones the children have done on their own.

We were so lucky to have such a great camp. Unfortunately, there were only two classes that got to go. We will have to plan it for a bit earlier in the year next time. Read the kids blogs to see what their favourite parts of camp were

Chocolate Cake in a Mug.

Today we made a chocolate cake in a mug.  First, we had to watch a you tube clip and see if we could gather all the information we needed in order to make the cake ourselves.  We had to write down the ingredients and the method.  Then we made the cake with our learning buddy.  We had to measure out all the ingredients and then mix the cake.  We halved the mixture and cooked it in the microwave.  Greta did a masterfood presentation which I will post tomorrow.  I think her and Emma are budding domestic goddesses!

This is the clip we watched:

Thanks instructables for the instructions!

A Moment in time Writing

Room 10 kids have been doing "A Moment in Time" writing. This is Mrs Roil's writing. Everyone else has posted theirs on their bogs. Check them out.

I heard water rushing.
I heard the excited bark of the dog.
I saw the writhing mess of bodies as they were dumped on the ground.
I saw the slithering mess of slime as the ground became alive.
I felt my heart pounding.
I felt unable to escape. I was surrounded in every direction.
I wondered if they would find their way to the water.

I wondered if we could just have bacon for breakfast!
